What could possibly go wrong? And plus, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to run through a fire.
What’s your year going to look like?
At the beginning of every year I come up with a word for myself. It’s not a resolution… just a word that will inspire me for the next 365 days… to hold as a sort of flag.
To keep me focused… and when I’m out of focus I can gently and graciously bring myself back to this word.
So, for 2026 I’ve come up with something (and contrary to popular belief, it is not “FIRE-JUMPING-BURN-MEAT”).
It was inspired by a buddy / mentor of mine @dreaded.pastor who was a massive influence and encourager to me when we lived in Minneapolis. He drove with me in our moving truck to Connecticut in 2001 and has a wild story of beating stage 4 cancer along with doing piles of work with the fringe population. Such a G.
As our 3 day drive came closer to arriving in my new job working with youth, I asked for some wisdom he could pass along and he told me a story that still hits me today.
“Neek, people are like plants… if you give this plant the right greenhouse with fresh soil, water, sunlight, and care, it’s going to thrive… but that same plant will quickly be destroyed if you throw it outside in the middle of winter just 4’ away.”
GREENHOUSE
This is my word.
And it’s fascinating to look at my own life… when I’ve been in the right greenhouse I’ve been able to shine.
Even with music… sometimes I’ll play a song in a venue and nobody will care or listen but in a different venue (playing the same song with the same story and the same person singing) it has had the ability to really touch people. It’s the right greenhouse.
So my hope is to not only find / create some inspiring greenhouses for myself to shine but to also always be looking for ways to build this for my people. My friends. My clients. My family. My partner.
