Song & Rants #10 | Jaws & Perspectives w/ cover “The Way It Is” ft Joshua Smith

March 22, 2021 by Nico Leave a Comment

A fun little session with my buddy Eric Vivian on perspectives with a Bruce Hornsby cover of “The Way It Is” featuring Joshua Smith. This topic was inspired by a super funny (and perhaps mildly inappropriate) TikTok video about the story of Jaws… but we do a little dive into some of Eric’s more vulnerable thoughts and stories around what he’s had to walk through as he shares some keys to risking and living a life that doesn’t suck.

If you’re interested in working through some of your old stories, book a session to find out a little bit more about how a coaching session might be able to serve you here.

Eric Vivian is the co-owner and co-founder of NeuMovement here in the Okanagan. He is also a stellar mountain biker and soccer player (which is how we met). He’s an all around athlete and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

Joshua Smith is a Kelowna-based singer songwriter and stud who can play and sing anything you throw at him.

Song & Rants #9 | Numb or Heart-forward & original song “Gentle Redirection”

February 10, 2021 by Nico Leave a Comment

*** VULNERABILITY ALERT ***
please don’t watch this if you’re uncomfortable with a little emotion

Are you numb? The temptation to numb out is intense. I feel it and so many of my clients struggle with it… because in some ways it’s a lot easier to be numb so you don’t have to deal with the lows… but you also miss the highs.

How is it possible to live a life that is fully heart-forward… investing of yourself… your whole self. How do you share your life and your heart and your gifts freely with the world without living in self-protection mode in a constant state of fear?

If you struggle with any of these things and would like to get some coaching around living a life that is more heart-forward, I’d love to connect with you. I know that for myself and my clients who have chosen to turn the “NUMB KNOB” down, there is a life that feels a lot more alive. Yes, it may come with some hard conversations and/or emotions but the prize is worth the battle… if you have the courage to take the first step.

Song & Rants #8 | Gifts of Grief w/ Joshua Smith & tune “Waiting on the Day”

January 25, 2021 by Nico Leave a Comment

Have you ever lost something or someone and wondered if you’d ever be able to work through it? How does this work? What is the gift of grief?

These are some of the questions I (Nico Boesten) ask Joshua Smith, a local (Kelowna, BC) singer songwriter and friend who just released an album written about his dad who passed last year. We play a live version of “Waiting on the Day” at the end.

What’s your happy place (both emotionally & geographically)?
In the bowels of the forest, my son & I camped out at a natural hot springs where this was recorded.

Thanks to my friends (Jimmy Zen-Young & Bethany Davis for the inspiration on this one… along with my super pal Jan Vozenilek for the video work.

Song & Rants #5 | Anxiety sucks, listening is magic & Coldplay cover “Fix You”

November 30, 2020 by Nico Leave a Comment

Piles of people are dealing with anxiety these days and there are piles of different types of therapy… but what’s the magical potion to being fixed? It seems that being heard and being seen (like, REALLY being seen) can actually change your life. It did for me.

Thanks to my guest and insanely amazing friend Lance Barkman for joining me and sharing his wisdom.

Song & Rants #4 | Suck the Lemon

November 16, 2020 by Nico Leave a Comment

A “Song & Rants” about what “sucking the lemon” means… along with why plants suck and the beautiful thing about painful situations.

Nobody (at least, anybody I know) actually ENJOYS pain. I mean, who actually LIKES walking through painful stuff… taking the high road, facing the hard stuff. What’s beautiful about facing the hard stuff (sucking the lemon) is how good it feels afterwards. How rewarding it is to know that you asked and answered the questions that were SOOOOOO hard to ask. And yes, sometimes you need some help. Some support. Some coaching. Some counselling. Some friends. That’s the reality. What I’d like to encourage you (and myself) with today is to suck the lemon. To face the hard questions. To NOT run. To NOT look for that escape. To embrace what you need to face. You can do it. You will do it. You will be OK.

This song is a David Wilcox cover of “All the roots grow deeper when it’s dry“. Thanks to Shona for reminding me of this beauty.

Rope Swing Fail – Trying is lying

September 17, 2020 by Nico Leave a Comment

Sometimes you’ve just gotta send it.

My dad used to always say “Trying is lying”.. and then he’d grab a pen or something that was close by and say “TRY to pick this up… you don’t TRY to pick it up, you do it”.

I found this old clip I took a few years ago of some guy I met at a festival… he absolutely did a full send off of this rope swing with no pre-checking the water… and unfortunately got a little wrapped up in the rope. Luckily it wasn’t fatal (which is why I can post this with no guilt) but he did find out that the water was only a few feet deep so luckily he landed on his back!

Enjoy… and, don’t forget to try that thing you’ve been too chicken to try. You may end up with a little bruise but it’ll probably make for some great footage.
