2 funny myths about being a life coach

April 22, 2025Leave a Comment

I thought I’d share 2 of the most common assumptions people have made about me being a life coach…

1. It’s an emotional “blowing of smoke and sunshine up one’s bum bum”.

This is quite a common stereotype… a lot of people think it’s similar to this Key & Peele skit where the life coach desperately yells at you trying to make you think that “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING”… like a delusional hype mascot at an eternal positive party.

Unfortunately, in order to get to where you’re wanting to go, change is required. Change can be hard. Adopting a new perspective can mean letting go of beliefs you’ve carried since you were sucking on a soother. It can also be wildly liberating and refreshing… but that’s what you get if you’ve got the cahonas to start the journey to discover the strongest and truest version of yourself.

2. “Oh you’re a life coach so you’ve got all of your poop in a group”.

I’ve heard this quite a bit… there can be an expectation for me to basically be a professional at living life and it’s my role to guide and instruct you to live as I live.
Nope.
One of the first things I tell potential clients is, “I don’t give any advice”.
This actually shocks some people because they just want to be told exactly what to do. Unfortunately, clarity comes from understanding yourself.
Your own values.
Dreams.
Fears.
The stuff and people you love.
The stuff you’re amazing at and brings you life.
What I do is help you dig and discover these things so that you can be clear(er) on building the kind of life YOU want. My training has helped me become a better listener and question-asker… and one of the hardest things for me as a life coach is to NOT let my own opinions get in the way of helping you answer the questions you need to be asking.
If you were to do the things I like doing you will probably break your back.
For the record, I regularly access my own coaches and therapists… the healthier and “cleaner” I can be, the better coach I am for my people.
